Following General Humbert – Tales of Rebellion and Tragedy
Ireland was under British rule for almost 800 years and there were many rebellions by the Irish people in other to gain freedom. Possibly the most well known was the rebellion of 1798 which was led by Wolfe Tone and supported by the French (my enemies enemy is my friend) who were led by General Jean Joseph Humbert. The French landed at Kilcummin north of Killala and won a number of battles before being defeated at the Battle of Ballinamuck. This tour takes you through the countryside revisiting the sites of battle and hearing the stories of the the victories and ultimate defeat of the Franco/Irish ‘army’. The rebellion was followed by terrible retribution against the Irish which lived on in the memory for many years.
