Belmullet Town Wells

January 13, 2021Gemma O'ConnorBelmullet Town

There are two spring wells that provided fresh water for the town until water pumps were erected in 1882. There were known as ‘Mussel’s Wells’ due to their location beside the home of two spinster sisters Ellen and Sarah Mussel. You can imagine the labour required to carry the water from here to houses around the town. Today piped water comes from Carrowmore Lake via the three water towers which were erected in 1993.
